You have to be connecting from or to an AA flight within (I believe) 24 hours to get the codeshare option.

BA flight numbers earn miles just like AA flight numbers though.

(My travel next month is AA JFK-EDI, BA EDI-LHR-BUD, AA codeshare on BA PRG-LHR, AA LHR-JFK) all on one ticket issued by AA
