The point as I understand it being: there are more acceptable uses of that time for a married person with kids than a single person.

And in many workplaces, it is somewhat (or more than somewhat) frowned upon when you use all your sick days every single year. So if one person can only take them when they themselves are sick, and another can take them if any one of five different people are sick, then there is an imbalance there.

I'm not going to speak to whether that imbalance is worth getting upset over or not, but I think that is the point.
