You have not been to a rock show until you've seen the Foo Fighters...(Fenway Review)

I almost didn't make it. I got there, Diva was already there and "Royal Bloodlines" was playing at hellish volume. It was more proof that I'm old because I was *this* close to leaving. But 20 Something Mel held fast. Good thing...
We were treated to the Dropkick Murphy's at Fenway. I remember when they played to the smallest groups imaginable. It was a good, typical set. "Shipping up to Boston" at Fenway in front of a big crowd was fun.
The FF are a great rock band. The music gets a bit same but the show is KISS level energy. My respect for Grohl and his mates grows and grows. The fact that he didn't cancel the tour after *breaking his goddam leg* is sort of incredible. Instead, he took the opportunity to have made for himself an 80s Ozzy like thrown which moved back and forth (utterly my hero for this, when I win the lottery I'm having something similar made). It was, until later, the most rock thing I've seen in a stadium setting. But it was surpassed later.
Anyone who's watched Sonic Highways or knows what Grohl is about knows that he is a steward of Rock, it's history, origins and preservation. It was evident throughout the show. He knows his stuff. He referenced, local clubs here (I think I broke Diva's ears when I screamed at the reference to "The Rat" - they didn't broom the floor at the end of the night, they used a hose), brought Sully from Godsmack up and all was nearly complete when they started to play, "Let's Go" by the Cars. The only demerit was that the didn't finish.
He clearly loves Rock. He wants people to know the little smelly bits, or the old blues guys who toiled in obscurity and see behind the curtain of the famous people. I really dig that. Keep in mind - he was in fucking Nirvana.
I thought the most rock thing I'd seen in a stadium show as his Rock Throne until...he brought his orthopedic surgeon up on stage for some well deserved credit and then...let him cover, in it's entirety - "Seven Nation Army". I don't think I'll ever see something as metal as that. Imagine Dr. Lew Schon as a high school student...working away in his math and science classes. I doubt he imagined he'd be on stage in front of 40K screaming people. It was one of the most bizarre covers ever for the sheer strangeness.
Dave is also by far the most talky frontman ever. He's on the other end of the spectrum from Trent Reznor. It got a bit much but it's tolerable.
The Foo's simply put out a great rock show. I doubt you can tell when they have an off night and I get the sense that he pops into some dungy, cave like local dive from time to time still.
