Yes, the title hero is male. And the source material requires another lead male (Pym), but it also requires Hope van Dyne and her part was horribly underwritten.

Everyone else in the film could have been male, female, trans, asexual, etc without affecting the story being told. Its just that the writers of the film and creative forces behind the comics that inspired the characters are all male.
