That assumes the newer tech is even in the same 'space' to go whizzing by

Lots of faster than light theories involve folding space or alternate dimensions to get around the whole nothing faster than light thing.
So it would kind of like the first travelers taking the stairs and then newer tech being an express elevator.
The faster ship would just be at the other side of the journey
