The problem is that early favorites have a tendency to linger. Mayor 9/11 led the polls for 12 months.

It's impossible for the other folks to get their name out there if the media is focusing on one or two candidates to their exclusion.
If this is a conservative deep op, the tactic would involve distracting the media with Trump to keep people from vetting the other candidates until they're the nominee...but as we learned with Palin, even that is fraught with peril.
