I haven't studied it in any depth, but my amateur view sees gentrification as part of the broader pattern of population shifts

which happen, have happened, and will continue to happen forever.

Of course, in gentrification the choice about that shift belongs to the people with money and the 'shift' by those with less/little/no money is not a choice. What that does existing communities would be of interest to me.

(I also can't imagine Harlem as the next Williamsburg of Chelsea. That feels wrong to the history of Harlem)
