Our upgrade process took 7 years for this reason and we had to completely scrap one piece of software 5 years in and start over.
Luckily, I came in at year 4.5 and only had to go through one round of implementation but it sapped a lot of energy and happiness around here.
And the new software isn't perfect but it at least seems to work.
