ST, I could use some lawyery (or non lawyery) advice . opinions on something...... -- (edited)

So, in April, my mother’s husband’s mother died. She left her assets to my mom and husband. During the setup for the wake, mom’s husband’s uncle gave him 7 grand towards expenses.

In June, my mom’s husband died. Leaving her to fend for both his arrangements, and getting rid of his mom’s house and assets. We sold the house in the beginning of the month.

Fast forward to today, his uncle called my mom and wants his 7 grand back. He states the money was a loan until the house was sold, a deal he made with mom’s husband, which my mom was completely unaware of.

He threatened to sue her yesterday.

Am I wrong in thinking that a “handshake agreement” is not enforceable in court? There is nothing in writing anywhere about the money being a loan, and my mom is freaking out.
