I talked to one of the top folks at one of the main hospitals here and he was pretty relaxed about requirements for technical skills. He really didn't confirm for me what languages I'd need to know (I sensed that because they change from time to time he didn't want to get pinned down on a recommendation).
None the less I'm taking some formal SQL training soon after 15 years of playing with it on my own - for starters.
