That scene in Capaldi's first episode of Doctor Who where he asks Clara "Will you help me?" is very powerful.

All the moreso because it's Peter fucking Capaldi from the Thick of It having a very tender moment. And it's totally ruined by the music.

The following scene where we're introduced to "Missy" is a bit of fun. Was there ever any question from the start that she was in fact the Master? I mean, "Mistress" is just the feminine of "Master".

Little scenes like this are what make Doctor Who work. Overarching concepts - like the fact that Missy was somehow manipulating the afterlife - are what make it fail entirely. If you can't go big - and honestly, the "big" underlying plotline this past season was a failure in my opinion - then go deep. It's the one-off episodes that really work. Look, for instance, at how successful the Weeping Angels were. They were a one-off that was so successful that it's taken a life of its own.
