Max essentially went from disinterested observer to the guy who was so invested in the outcome that he came up with the plan that led to the overthrow of Joe. They offered him a "fully loaded" bike with which to do with as he please. Presumably ride off in a different direction. But he styaed with them. Without him the small party would have road out into the desert for 160 days and died. Not only that - his plan lead to the liberation of the entire city.
