Thanks to Global Entry I never have to talk to the US guys but found them to be all right in general. BUT

in various airports in the US, the people they have working the line coordination or policing for phone use in the customs area can be some of the rudest, most unwelcoming, most embarrassing to their fellow Americans. It's awful.
