Looking up Atlantic hurricanes (thanks, Beaker), hurricane Mitch killed nearly 20,000 people in 1998!

That's mind boggling. The deadliest Atlantic hurricane was in 1780 in the midst of the American Revolution. An estimate 22,000 dies in the Carribean (and I wonder if that even counted slaves). Just how high was the population density in those islands in the 18th century? And I wonder if it countributed to the defeat of the British given that it sank a number of their ships.
