heh, a writer I follow linked to this piece on writing, which talks about the importance of what to leave out. I would have pruned the heck out of it.

(I know, she who can write all.the.words thinks something is too wordy; but I work to not include unnecessary stuff/fluff/floweriness/etc. ;p)
the linking writer (who clearly appreciates the beauty of some writing, as I do) apparently didn't share my opinion on this, saying, if she had her way, all articles would be by the writer* and on writing. (he does have some good points, but the sheer over-wordiness of a piece on omission is something; plus the pervasive intellectual pretentiousness and stylistic choices in this and other pieces I've read from him just aren't for me.)
also, this is a rare thing - I don't know, and (gasp.) google isn't helping me find what a "soft, ferric voice" would be. those adjectives don't go together in my mind at all. unless, maybe, it's meant to replace "rusty"?
*the writer, john mcphee, is a pulitzer prize winner. over the years, I've come to realize that the award for general writing does not necessarily mean I'd agree vs., say, their awards for news coverage.
