my guess is that he didn't see the details of the jersey at the time of purchase.

of course, it's the team/player that matters the most; but the 88 is actually a thing for some white supremacists. if there isn't a particular connection to the player; and, say, someone is jewish and/or lives with someone who is, it could be a thing to wear it.
