My domestic and domestic-like* upgrades are auto-requested and I am auto upgraded, as available.

That window starts 100 hours before flight so I could be upgraded at that time or any time up until the flight is boarding (or not upgraded). I don't have to do anything, it's automated.

(*Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean are treated like domestic for upgrade purposes)


For international long-haul upgrades (I get 8 systemwide upgrades a year to use as an EXP) I call in to request once I book. If upgrade inventory is available (more rare than common) I can get upgraded right then, even if it's 9 months in advance. Otherwise I go on a waitlist and they may upgrade me at any time up until boarding at the gate. Again, I don't have to do anything, it's all automated.
