So, each company - or each team within a company (although that's not advisable) - creates its own Slack instance.

Inside that slack instance, they can create chat channels, create private channels, IM each other, share files, and in the paid version share screens.
And it's all seamless between the desktop, the web, and the mobile client.
It's at least a year ahead of the curve for third party integrations, too, compared to upcomers Zulip and Mattermost.
