My advise is, plan very well and be sure you both agree with the plans.
My dad built what on the out side appeared to be a barn with a huge extension. On the inside, the living room was in the front end of the barn. It was 30 feet wide, forty feet deep and the ceilings went all the way to the top. Huge fireplace on the interior end and the master bedroom was on the other side of the fireplace upstairs. Same vaulted ceilings (but from the second floor) with fireplace.
My bedroom had a private entrance (other side of the barn, downstairs) and private bathroom. Two more bedrooms and a huge kitchen and work areas in the extension. He went kind of nuts building this thing. He made a bloody fortune when he sold it and moved to Florida.
