Historically they had rather old planes (tons of MD-80s) but, not long before the merger, they ordered 400+ new planes.

If they had not merged, they would have had the youngest fleet a couple of years from now. With the merger, don't think that is true, but still will be a much younger fleet.
Definitely a mixed bag still, but they are down from 350 MD-80s ~10 years ago to less than 100 at the end of this year, and they will all be gone by 2017. Meanwhile, they are taking delivery of several new 737-800s and A321s every month.
