I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around the term "static website generator". Is this just a new word for "HTML editor"? -- nm

No. The output of a static site generator is raw HTML, but the input can use all kinds of technology to bring it together. -- nm

I use the Sculpin static site generator to maintain whateverthing.com - most of the content is in Markdown, and it uses the Twig templating engine -- (link)

You can do all kinds of things as part of the build process - but once the HTML is uploaded to the server, it doesn't change. -- (edited)

No - wordpress is dynamic. Technically the output is still HTML, but it's built on each request. Static site generators build it once. -- nm

There are plugins that do caching of wordpress's output, and they are very close to the same behaviour as a static site generator. -- nm
