You can do all kinds of things as part of the build process - but once the HTML is uploaded to the server, it doesn't change. -- (edited)

At least until the next build.
So if you wanted to fetch the latest news stories from another site, you'd have to build more frequently to keep the dynamic content fresh.
Alternatively, you can carve up little chunks of the webpage and make them semi-dynamic using javascript - then they can fetch data on their own (assuming they have permission to touch the other domains involved) and give the site a more dynamic feel.
