I'm not sure I've ever shared the story with ST before, but I spent a morning getting some abdominal tests run. The nurse busted on me the entire time over my eating habits. She was so sardonic (not in a mean way, it was just her thing).
Two days later at 7 AM, she called and I could hear the panic in her voice. The situation wasn't funny anymore.
She wanted me to head to the emergency room for surgery *right then*. Then, someone instructed her to tell us to meet the surgeon at his office first.
So, we were in a panic, thinking there was a real chance I might die that day when we met the physician. He took a look at all the information available, studied the test results, and then he took control of the situation. Rather than operate that day in a way that would have reduced my quality of life, he put me on meds to reduce the inflammation, which was the real problem.
A month later, he performed the surgery in a much more controlled setting when I wasn't in any danger. A worse doctor would have *at best* performed reckless surgery that day.
I say all of this to note that you'll know when you have the right doctor, and you'll take tremendous comfort when that happens. It sounds like your family may already have reached that point, which is tremendous.
