I ran into a Palliative Care doctor this morning, who I worked with recently. He deals with cancer patients specifically. He's incredibly smart, amazingly dedicated and one of the kindest human beings I've met. You just feel better being in his presence. He thanked me again, in detail and genuinely for some work I'd done for one of his projects. I hated aspects of the project but never felt so intensely good about what I was doing. If he called for anything I'd likely do it.
I also worked on another project involving pediatric cancer patients. Those doctors are amazing heroes. They, to a person, have a grim look in their eyes. They've seen things that are crushing I am sure. They have resolve, none the less, elementally dense. I'm sure they've sacrificed very personal parts of their lives for their mission.
I saw one doctor who was an absolute asshole in every meeting I was a part of get down on the floor and play with a little girl who was clearly going through something very difficult. It was hard to figure out who had the happier smile.
These are just a few examples and only from my professional life. There are others from my personal life which I won't share.
