Avengers 2 was a follow-up to a massive popular and well-received original....Avengers 2 is about 1.3B shy of Avatar's total gross.

Star Wars 7 is a follow-up to 3 large successes but poorly-received movies....there's a lot that has to happen to approach 2.7B.
