To a certain extent, Star Wars is why there is global box office.

In terms of international revenue, three of the top seven films released prior to 1990 are Star Wars. The Phantom Menace was the fourth film to half a billion abroad. The track record for excellence is there. Americans are the more fickle crowd these days.
