My ex-wife (math genius) and I just had an extensive discussion about how our 5th grader is doing algebra and it's *HARD*.

The perimeter of a field is 12.5km.  It is four times as long as it is wide.  What is the area?

I had to step away and compose myself to figure it out. After a moment, I totally had it. But I'm concerned that I used "old math" and he's using "new math" and I don't want to teach him wrong.

Also, algebra in the 5th grade?!!!
