I don't think they did. They know that they can't win a direct confrontation with the west. They only win if we lose the will to fight them.

They believe (and probably rightfully so) that they can win a fair fight against Assad and the rebels. What they need is for their backers to pull out so its no surprise they hit a Russian airliner (backing Assad) and a French city (backing the rebels).
They've learned from their experience in Iraq that if they can stretch out the fight and make the death toll high enough, we'll abandon the fight. That's what they are trying to do.
I'm sure there are already calls for France to pull out of fighting to avoid these attacks in the future. That's exactly what they want.
