You're very much right. I sat in empty stands at many Yankee games because they were just on a down slide, forget the late 80s when it was a ghost -- (edited)

town. Teams have to fight hard to get the dollar of the fan and it's not easy with so many other options. I know it's not just here because you see it in every city. If the team is down people won't show up, even early in the season. The people in the media tell them how bad they're going to be so they go into the season expecting a bad team. When things don't start off well it just reinforces that belief and the fans stay home.
It sucks because home field matters a lot in basketball. The fans make a big difference unlike in some sports or stadiums.
