When I was broke I'd do handmade gifts like baked goods. Everyone would eat them and then say I was cheap. (I always thought cheap was different from broke. Anyhoo...) Then when I started earning money I'd spoil the kids - probably to overcompensate from those days when I couldn't buy gifts.
