we had a nutso materalistic fest one year, the only year that all (at the time) of the second gen little kids were together.

so like 10 little kids all tearing things open and looking for another present then another, etc., totally not appreciating each one, tossing them aside for more.
the next year, I gave the usual kinds of birthday presents; but for the holidays decided to give something nice but smaller and also give a donation in the names of the kids to a children's charity and note that in the cards. you would have thought that I had, en masse, stolen all of the kids toys away or something. the kids didn't care, of course, it was the parents. (I also make cookies every year and give gifts to my sisters and the brothers who give me something - those didn't count either.) humans. ;p
