that's the wives tale - I know there can be bad ones even in-date, so I usually -- (edited)

go by the date plus a week or so, for commercial eggs. less for, like, farmers market eggs. (ed. to add that I always break eggs into a separate bowl before adding them to anything because ya never know.)

there are stories about eggs lasting way longer. just the thought of a bad one makes me on the verge of gaggy, so I don't mess around.
