The default subreddits can get very overcrowded with posts and if you're not one of the early commentors it's likely to get lost in the noise.

On the smaller subreddits the conversations can be fun and interesting as well as much easier to follow along. The big ones like r/science or r/askreddit have too many subscribers so it's hard to have a good back and forth. Smaller ones like r/calvinandhobbes are less busy and so you can post and know it'll be seen and commented on.
