It's primarily an exercise in discipline (but I still think a really good practice). We decide on a yearly budget....
....making sure we're saving a portion of our take-home.
As far as the tracking goes,
someone I used to work with remarked how easy it is to lose track of your spending...even if you work with a mental budget (e.g. "I'm only going to spend $400 on groceries this month" )it's really easy to suffer budget creep - a little here and a little there adds up. It's hard enough to do by yourself, let alone if there's someone else who's spending in the household.
So we have maintained a google spreadsheet into which we record everything that's out of pocket - all other fixed costs have already been taken into account
