Again, it's a simple cost-benefit analysis. They often have insurance for these things as well that dictate defense. Defending any claim

costs thousands at a minimum. We have a justice system that requires each side to be responsible for their own legal fees (in most cases) regardless of outcome. So small dollar cases don't make sense to defend.
