Given up? No. Both the president and Clinton have called for further restrictions on gun ownership in the last month.

But this is an issue that will only be resolved from the ground up.
There is broad public support for further restrictions, but it's generally not an issue that drives voters to the polls.
That may change as the actual dimensions of the issue become better known
