deja vu all over again - I have had something like this happen so many times in my life, and with at least a dozen different stylists:
I went for a cut last night, asked for 1.5 inches off, she showed that length to me on a comb, showed it to me after the first cut.... and then it turned out she cut off around 6 inches. having experienced extra cutting from her before, I really wanted ~3 inches off (ends kept getting caught in bag shoulder straps, and my hair grows pretty fast), so I asked for half that. 6 is *a lot.* it went from down my back almost to bra strap level and lower decolletage in front when combed-out wet to just a little past my shoulders.
I literally gasped when I saw her comb it forward to see if the sides were even and pointed out that it was way more than 1.5 inches off - she started to say that she'd just taken more off the sides, but she stopped that nonsense when I gave her a look. she apologized.
I have kept going back to her because she has never (*knocks wood*) cut my bangs too short, which is the very worst hair cutting thing for me. after a past too-much experience, I just had her trim my bangs for a long time; but she seemed reliable with smaller length trims recently, so I trusted. wah.
(I think the over-cutting happens with stylists because they are trying to even-out. despite my saying that a little imperfect is ok because my hair waves/curls up when it dries, and I never see it straight unless it's wet, they keep going. :/)
