And I guess I should follow up to say that when we're talking about directing and cinematography, it doesn't matter if the story is 'dumb.' It's about

the craft, skill and invention brought to the telling of that story. I certainly wouldn't nominate it for best screenplay. Where it shines is in how vividly and inventively it's brought to life on the screen and how much we learned of the story not just by what we are told but by how we are told.
