In those days the Bird Rule was unlimited. Also, MJ had come off a contract that had him severely underpaid. He had signed a long term deal early in

his career and played the last few years on a contract that wasn't even in the top ten (maybe not top 20). When asked about renegotiating that contract he would always say he knew what the contract was when he signed it and wasn't going to renegotiate. He wanted long term security and got it. The last couple of contracts were essentially make up pay.
