The point is that there are no 2 students with exactly the same qualifications when you get past the 10% rule. The minority has a "point on his

ledger" as a minority. So does the athlete in a non-scholarship sport. So does the kid that overcame a learning disability or leukemia. So does the kid that writes an essay that resonates with the reviewer. The admissions committee is trying to build a student body and find the right people to make it as effective as possible. Diversity is a factor in that. It helps the whole student body, not just the individual student. And these other kinds of "special cases" do too. And you're never comparing apples to apples. Equal grades from one school vs. another may mean different things, and what kinds of classes they are in. If you spend time talking to or listening to what college admissions people are saying you'd get a better sense of what it is. As I said, even among 2 white students, the one with the "better scores" isn't necessarily the one getting in.
