purely merit based. It's not. It never has been. And the "merit" that is being reviewed by admissions people is largely subjective. A grade at one school may not really be equal to a grade at another school. Admissions people actually get to know the schools in their districts to try to understand those differences. One person's extra-curricular is different than another's. People's experiences that they bring are different. One kids essay is different than another. It's all subjective.
