As someone who knows NYC, Justin realized that he'd get bled dry if he let this cab driver gouge him right at the start.

You're arguing that he should have known the unknowable. The Green Team did what they had the entire season. They made a calculated decision based on the information at hand, and it was absolutely the correct one as a general premise. In this particular instance, the Reporters' pure gamble paid off, but what the Green Team did is what works most of the time. Their seven wins reinforce this.

If anything, the issue with the season finale was how disturbingly basic it was. The only "challenges" were a crate-pull and an Ikea quiz. Justin correctly expected more. The shock was how lazy the producers were at the end.
