First, I'd highly recommend the wired ethernet adaptor and forgo wireless entirely. However, wireless works much like the 3DS.

You can manually or tutorially set up to I think 5 connections. You can use various methods like WPS or imputting the WPA password. Then make one of the connections the "Primary" that it tries to use first.
I've found that often I'll have to unfortunately go back into the settings to "reconfirm" it.
You'll know you're connected because your Mii Plaza will have posts from MiiVerse rather than generic ones.
