my honest recollection is that whatever excitement i had was mostly killed by the trailer and reading spoilers of the actual story

i instantly had a bad feeling about Jar Jar the moment he appeared in the first trailer, but held out hope that the rest of the story would compensate for it.
but then you started hearing other bad shit about the racist Trade Federation dudes from the preview screenings, okay two strikes but maybe the rest of it will make up for that
and then you heard well, the kid playing Anakin sucks but . . .
it was just deflation by a thousand cuts before the actual release
