I agree that it looks much better than the prequels *are*. I don't necessarily agree that it looks better than how good people thought the prequels would be.

The "months to realize it sucked" thing is real. People were *angry* at the time that The Matrix beat it for a bunch of Oscars, and that was 9 months post-release.
