clever Emirates. side comment: the industry is rife with protectionism. it's a little disingenuous to throw the 'state-subsidized' card at the Gulf

airlines. the legacy carriers in the US probably benefit as much from protection of US internal routes as the Gulf carriers do from any state subsidies.
plus they at least contributed to the situation by bringing in open skies over Europe. that's really what led to the boom in Gulf carriers. that and convenient geography.
