write it as

s) $0.50

b) 0.50 cents

i've apparently started up a bit of something on facebook with this, because I think that (b) technically reads as "one half of a cent" and that (a) is the proper way to do it. (as in, the dollar sign essentially 'holds' the dollar position and thus indicates that the .50 is in fact fifty cents and not a fraction of a cent) ...
