Bette Davis was the star. Joan Crawford was supposed to co-star. They both notoriously hated each other after What Happened to Baby Jane the previous year. Bette does not want to work with Joan on HHSC.
So Joan shows up in Louisiana and quits on the first day of shooting b/c Bette did something to piss her off. Bette suggests Olivia de Haviland (who she does like) to replace Joan. Director agrees, and somehow by the next day, Olivia is on set and playing the part.
Joan comes back to the set, apologetic to the director, telling him she just blew her stack but now she's ready to get to work etc. Sees Olivia sitting in the chair where her character is supposed to sit and asks her what she's doing there.
Bette takes a big drag on her cigarette and says to Joan "She's playing your role, cunt"
Bette also apparently had the whole crew drink a toast to Joan quitting with Coca Cola (Joan's husband at the time ran Pepsi)
