I first read the book when I was in sixth grade or so and thus the later generations stuff stuck with me more. Even on rereading

The hour or so that I've seen for being set now makes for almost an entirely new but related work.

For me this is actually more enjoyable than a direct adaptation

course there's still like five hours to go.....
