I give props for Lucas creating SW and using the "distant mountains" style to build the universe, but I think he was too close (spoils)

For him, the story was always that Vader v Luke, past v future thing. He never wanted to explore those distant mountains and never thought they were all that important to explore. They were just a story-telling tool to serve his one chosen story.

But the fans saw the potential in those mountains to hold way more stories.

Yes, the extended universe was there in books and comics and cartoons and games, but he seemed very reticent to ever let that EU extend into the films.
